The Green Thumb Garden Club of Cranford, New Jersey received a grant from the AMES Tool Company, a National Garden Clubs grant sponsor. The club’s original plan was to work with local Brownie Scout troops and COVID-19 caused members to switch gears and work without the scouts. Club members were restricted to small groups for the plantings, wore masks and adhered to social distancing. Despite these challenges, the club members accomplished the plantings with the help of their new Ames tools. Particularly useful tools were the weeder/cultivator and the hand-held trowels.
Members planted annuals for Memorial Day at the Township of Cranford’s Memorial Park on Springfield Avenue. Cranford’s Memorial Park contains monuments to residents who died while serving the United States during wartime. The club typically plants red, white and blue annuals for the annual Memorial Day Parade. The festivities were canceled due to the pandemic. Therefore, this year, they designed a rainbow themed planting, selecting annuals in the colors of the rainbow, which has become associated with hope and cheer during the pandemic. Green Thumb Garden Club members brought cheerful color to their community and thank Ames Tool Company for their support.
