Plant America

NGC President Gay L. National Garden Clubs, Inc. sponsors many special projects that impact both U.S. and International communities. Each of these projects is intended to make a positive impact on the community and provide a way for members to get involved, make a contribution of their time and talents, participate, network and support our organization. These projects are a core part of what we do, and we need your support to keep them growing! Here is a sampling of some of the projects we sponsor:

  • Outreach Projects

NGC's outreach programs include Grants for Disaster Relief and a Global Partners Running Waters initiative to help provide clean water where needed. The disaster grant program funds efforts by local garden clubs to replant, restore and beautify public areas that have been damaged by such events as earthquakes, floods and storms.

  • Penny Pines Reforestation

The Penny Pines program, a partnership with the U.S. Forest Service, raises funds to replant damaged state and national forests coast-to-coast. Each $68.00 donation covers the cost of replanting replacement and/or trees indigenous (not just pine trees) to a particular damaged area, whether by fire or other natural catastrophe.

  • Scholarship Program

NGC is proud of its college scholarship program which offers financial aid to students majoring in fields of study related to horticulture and the environment. Applicant must be planning a career related to gardening, landscape design, environmental issues, floral design or horticulture. Thirty-nine (39) advanced annual scholarships were awarded in 2016 for the academic year of 2016-2017, each in the amount of $3,500.00.

  • Youth Programs

School gardening programs are popular nationwide. The last, and current, president has prepared a book for young children to teach them about the environment, gardening and horticulture. The "Saved Seed" was written to support the theme "Plant America", and 2015-2017 President Sandra Robinson commissioned "The Frightened Frog" to educate children on the plight of amphibians and their habitat. Youth poetry, essay and art contests include a sculpture competition using recyclable materials and the Smokey Bear / Woodsy Owl poster contest, sponsored in cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service.
