Make your membership bloom by participating in the new National Garden Clubs Membership Contest beginning June 1, 2008.

The STATE with the Greatest Percentage Membership in members will be honored by having a new canna cultivar named for their state.

This new canna variety to be named for the winning state is 3 1/2 feet high with red/red orange blooms and purple/black foliage.  It can be grown in all states and will be made available for sale in Fall, 2009 at $14 each.  It will be available to members in the winning state as well as nationwide.  Winner will be announced at 2009 Fall Board Meeting.

The Great Sunflower Project

The Great Sunflower Project, a community science project with the goal of increasing our understanding of where bees are doing poorly and how the pollination of our garden and wild plants are being affected, is creating a Buzz! Join this project by planting sunflowers in your garden. Community, demonstration, and school gardens are invited to participate.

Participants will be sent some free native sunflower (Helianthus annuus) seed and twice a month, you time how long it takes for 5 bees to visit one flower on that sunflower. This information will give an index of pollination that can be compared across the United States.  Once we know where bees are in trouble, we can start developing a plan to help them.

Connecticut Garden Clubs Recognized

The Federated Garden Clubs of Connecticut, Inc. along with the Connecticut Invasive Plants Council, Connecticut Invasive Plant Working Group, Nature Conservancy in Connecticut, and Invasive Plant Atlas of New England were recognized by official citation for their work to prevent the spread of invasive plant species in Connecticut.  The week of February 24-March 1, 2008 was proclaimed National Invasive Weed Awareness Week in the State of Connecticut by M. Jodi Rell, Governor.

National Invasive Weed Awareness Week is an opportunity for Connecticut citizens to learn to recognize non-native invasive plants and ways in which to stop them from spreading and damaging the state's biodiversity.  These organizations have worked diligently to educate the public on the identification, management and use of native plants and other non-invasive alternates that can be planted instead of invasive plants.
